  • I am a postpartum depression and anxiety survivor. Are you?

When this sweet cherub was born almost five years ago, I became a first time mom.

I had a vision for how it would go, and it was going to be great! After all I loved babies, I always wanted to be a mom, I worked with children all my life, I taught parenting classes, and I was a mental health therapist. I was so prepared, I thought.

What I experienced was worlds away from what I'd imagined.

𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝒐𝒏𝒆, I did not feel an instant bond. I loved my baby, but I didn't feel 𝘪𝘯 love. Was I a bad mom already?
𝑻𝒘𝒐, I had a delayed postpartum hemorrhage a week after my daughter's birth requiring an emergency trip to the hospital.
𝑻𝒉𝒓𝒆𝒆, nursing didn't create the special connection I had heard about. I was resentful that my husband didn't have to use his body to keep our baby alive. I never made enough milk.
𝑭𝒐𝒖𝒓, the pain of sleep deprivation was physical. Tangible. Torture.

𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝗺 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱? 𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿?

There is more to my story but the point is, when I became a mom it was rough. And I really could've used a safe space to meet up with other moms also in the thick of it. A group of other new moms making their way over and through the lumps and bumps of those first few months. A place where experts come by and offer personalized guidance.

That's what @newmomschool is and does. And if you're a new mom, I urge you to check them out!

I am so excited to have partnered with the New Mom School for a 𝗚𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗬!

I get to give one lucky mom (𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘺𝘰𝘶!) the opportunity to win a seat in the upcoming Newborn class!

NMS was not in San Diego when I had my kiddos, but oh my gosh I wish it had been. Their mission to help mamas with community and helpful information is so near and dear to my heart.

So here is the giveaway info!

Wʜᴏ ᴡɪʟʟ ᴡɪɴ:
A local mama who has a newborn to three-month-old baby (born between Dec 2020 and Feb 2021)

Wʜᴀᴛ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡɪɴ/Tʜᴇ Pʀɪᴢᴇ:

Wʜᴇɴ:
This class will begin on Thursday, March 11th and is weekly

Wʜᴇʀᴇ:

In class, you’ll learn about hot topics like how to reduce postpartum anxiety with breathing and yoga, how to successfully navigate changes to your relationship, and how to care for your postpartum body, plus much more!

And the best part -- a built-in tribe of fellow new mamas that can relate exactly to you in this stage!

  • Happy Valentine's Day to my love!

The butter to my toast.
The sparkle in my eye.
The bacon to my eggs.
The spring in my step.
The motorbike to my sidecar.

I know you hate this holiday, but boy do I sure love you. 😍

Do you celebrate Valentine's Day or is it just another day?

  • Rainbows -- the bright rays of hope and magic after a dark and scary storm.

Rainbows -- a symbol that has come to represent miscarriage, pregnancy loss, and the birth of children following loss.

Miscarriage is a topic that used to be hush-hush. The silence and stigma held hands, and they held tight.

But not anymore.

Now more and more women are sharing their stories, to seek community for themselves, to offer solidarity to others, and to heal.

The reality is one in four pregnancies ends in miscarriage. That is a lot. And I'll be darned if the women who suffer through the trauma think they're alone.

And so today I am shouting from the rooftops about The Miscarriage Map Workbook by @sunitaosborn and published by @pesi_inc

Sunita expertly crafted an easy-to-follow journey towards healing after pregnancy loss. Her authenticity and experience -- both personal and professional -- are evident throughout, offering relatable and supportive texts and exercises.

Head to my link in bio to read my review which includes a brief overview of how the book is structured and how it will help you or someone you love.

Share with any mamas you know who may appreciate to know about this fabulous and helpful workbook!

💜What word would you use to describe your emotions after pregnancy loss?💜

  • Each and every day that more and more folks get the covid vaccine is a good day in my book!

With every dose given, we are that much closer to a post-pandemic world.

I know I for one can't wait.

This was my second dose, and my goodness, it was a doozy. May the low-symptom gods ever be in your favor -- they certainly were not in mine.

Have you gotten yours yet? How was it for you? If not, do you know when it'll be your turn?

  • When we become mothers, we experience a rebirth of ourselves.

As our babies emerge from our wombs, we emerge from our own cocoons anew.

And just as the butterfly is determined to unfold her compacted wings, we too begin the miraculous and achy journey of discovering who we are as a mother.

No two mothers have the same new motherhood experience. And no one mother experiences motherhood exactly the same subsequent times.

Each time we are reborn.

Each time you are learning how to be a mother to 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 baby.

You and your baby were both born and reborn in the same exact moment. You will walk the path together. You will stumble and stand tall, together.

So as you awake into your motherhood, please, remember to be gentle with yourself. Give yourself grace. You are learning as you go. You are learning as you grow. ❤️

  • There's not much sweeter than reading special books to your new little babe!

Laying on our backs, looking up at our books together, sharing in the visual art of the illustrations and the written art of the text, enriching our children's minds, bonding and connecting... It's just so special.

And it evolves over time. Reading is still cherished in our house, but now both kids pick out their favorites and pile onto my lap, they follow along and laugh preemptively at the funny parts, and sometimes big sis even 'reads' the books to me!

"The Lazy Haze of Baby Days" written and self-published by Lindsay @the.madsen.littles is a book that you and your children will both enjoy. This sweet rhyming story that your children will want read to them again and again perfectly captures the chaotic and magical experience of early motherhood.

If you're a new mom, or you know someone who will be, this is a great find.

  • Posted @withregram • @sandiegomomsco Meet Christina Furnival, Founder & CEO (Chief of Everything Officer) of @thisisreallifemama. She is a mom to two young children, wife, licensed mental health therapist (LPCC), a writer and an author. She parlayed her experience of being a first time mom into helping others with their path to wellness.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Her journey to wellness involved seeking out therapy, reaching out to friends and family, getting her body moving, upping self-care, and writing. Her love of writing led her to launch the Real Life Mama blog. We are honored to share her story with you today in this week's "As Strong as the Mother Next to Me" spotlight.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What does “As Strong as the Mother Next to Me” mean to you, Christina? “We live in a world where often motherhood is experienced individually and silently, where we don’t have much support while we try to do it all, and we feel disconnected from or judged by others. This needs to change. As Strong as the Mother Next to Me means we recognize the commonalities, struggles, and triumphs true to us all. We offer support, and we accept it when offered. We join our power and hold one another up.”

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The "As Strong as the Mother Next to Me" spotlight is a new weekly feature that will highlight and celebrate Moms right here in San Diego and across the globe that believes in building up and supporting moms. Our hopes are that if we can debunk the idea that you have to take on this journey alone, as a community of moms we will all walk away stronger, inspired, and that we will raise stronger children and become better partners. @strongmother.co
  • Hi! I'm Christina @thisisreallifemama, mom and mental health therapist. Follow me!

Imagine you become a new mom, and it's just like you had envisioned.

Now imagine becoming a mom for a second time, and being blindsided with the heavy hand of 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Unfortunately, that is the story of many moms, maybe you're one.

"At the time I didn't know that's what was happening to me. I knew I was struggling and seriously emotional, but I didn't know what it was, so I put it down to the extra hormones.

From what I had heard about postnatal depression, it was often about struggling to bond with your baby, feeling resentful towards them, or not loving them. None of that is how I felt, so I thought well it can't be that! I love my baby and none of what was going on was directed at her, so I just thought it must be something else.

Plus if I'm honest, looking back I was in some sort of denial. I am a strong, capable, and happy person, and that surely this wasn't happening to me..."
